A reminder and celebration of "a great Miracle Happened There", when all that was left when the Synangogue was ruined was a few drops of oil from the Menorah. They lit it with heavy hearts and much prayer, and the Miracle was that the oil lasted 8 days and nights! That is why Hanukkah is celebrated that many days...to commemorate this miraculous holiday event. It is not a major holiday on the Jewish calendar.
