Artist's Description
The Festival of Lights is one of my favorite holidays. Although it is not a major holiday in the Jewish calendar, it lasts 8 days and nights. It is often confused to be the "Jewish Christmas", due to retail holiday advertising and the close time proximity of the two holidays on the calendar. Hanukkah is a commemorative holiday, celebrating the miracle of a few drops of oil that lasted 8 days and nights. The oil was found in the rubble of a Synagogue that was dessimated by the enemy. It is that miracle of the lights that we celebrate, and why there are 8 candles on the Menorah (candleabra). The 9th candle, the Shamash, is used to light each of the other candles on succesive nights. Children were given coins or "gelt" as gifts. The giving of nightly gifts that are increasingly retail and mercenary is a highly Americanized new "tradition" that sadly, puts Hanukkah in competition with Christmas. In spite of this holiday minor confusion, I wish you all a season of love, good health and kin...
About Lori Lafargue
Lori Lafargue is a creative woman with an enormous passion for photography, a zest for life and a penchant for laughter. An eye for unique angles, the bold, beautiful colors of nature leads her to the local flora, fauna, and feathers of Southeastern New England, Cape Cod, and beyond. ”I love to create natural images that show the beauty that is all around us. Let me tell you a little story of why this means so much to me...Years ago I challenged myself to find something pretty in the most awful of places I knew. In the darkest, ugliest, coldest spot I could find, I stood with my camera and eyes...
