Description
The Festival of Lights is one of my favorite holidays. Although it is not a major holiday in the Jewish calendar, it lasts 8 days and nights. It is often confused to be the "Jewish Christmas", due to retail holiday advertising and the close time proximity of the two holidays on the calendar. Hanukkah is a commemorative holiday, celebrating the miracle of a few drops of oil that lasted 8 days and nights. The oil was found in the rubble of a Synagogue that was dessimated by the enemy. It is that miracle of the lights that we celebrate, and why there are 8 candles on the Menorah (candleabra). The 9th candle, the Shamash, is used to light each of the other candles on succesive nights. Children were given coins or "gelt" as gifts. The giving of nightly gifts that are increasingly retail and mercenary is a highly Americanized new "tradition" that sadly, puts Hanukkah in competition with Christmas. In spite of this holiday minor confusion, I wish you all a season of love, good health and kind people around you always. The title is from the song by Peter, Paul and Mary, "Light One Candle" about the story of the Maccabees, fighting to save their Synagogue and the drop of oil that stayed lit for 8 days! This song brings tears to my eyes.
