I met "Sweetie Pie" on an early morning walk in Long Beach, Washington, while visiting family from Seattle. We had taken a weekend trip to get away from it all and to be together. As I was leaving the beach, I saw this short, chubby, very friendly, butt-wagging Dachsie walking off-leash about 15 ft from her owner. Her eyes-or lack thereof-were immediately apparent. I kneeled down to pet her and she wiggled and whined (Mom said this was the dog's version of purring!). I asked what happened to this aptly named pup, and was told she got a very bad infection under her eyelids that traveled back into her sockets. After IV antibiotics, flushing them out, and inner optic ointments, it was decided that excising both eyes was the only way to save her life. The owner was happy she chose the surgery because Sweetie Pie doesn't know she is blind. Her home and routine have remained the same and aside from a few bumps and bruises, the dog is more well adjusted than her new adoption...a rambunctious...
